Your New Favorite Bar

March 1, 2019

Rob Gentry, owner and founder of The Blue Plate metropolitan diner, felt that the restaurant’s bar was not reaching its potential. He decided to physically separate the space from the more family-friendly Blue Plate, redesign it and rebrand it as its own separate entity.

As a longtime partner in branding and marketing for The Blue Plate, Rob asked us to help create the identity of the bar. And Local 191 was born out of that collaboration.

The idea for the new bar grew out of making a small, comfortable spot for regulars and the community to gather. For the creative team, this brought to mind the old unions and guilds of the past — for electricians, plumbers, or woodworkers — a nice private gathering place for those in the know. From this inspiration the idea of the name “Local-something” was born. “Local 191” came from the place itself: the address, 191 Chestnut Street.

From 2012 to 2019 we designed the brand for multiple media and platforms: digital, interior graphics and signage, marketing and advertising, print collateral and merchandise. We collaborated on writing and photography to create a distinct and memorable personality for Local 191.

The personality was expressed through lighthearted and witty writing, supplied by our partner Caleb Ludwick of 26 Tools. Short and to the point, the messaging reflected the practical and accessible attitude of Local 191.

Photographers Grant Dotson and Graham Yelton added depth and color to the identity by showing off the space and the food and drinks.

In 2019, Local 191 gave way to a new Mexican inspired pop-up concept that Rob Gentry wanted to experiment with, and Localito 191 was born.

Southern Spooning

Chocolate sauce packaging

Southern Spooning chocolate sauce is a family recipe that started 40 years ago with Bernie Arnold, food editor for the Nashville Tennessean and Banner. She taught her daughter-in-law, Kay, how to make it, and Kay turned it into a chocolate sauce she has served her family for years. Her daughter, Lauren, is co-owner and business partner helping to bring Southern Spooning Chocolate Sauce to everyone.

Widgets & Stone had the pleasure of helping create the logo and packaging design for this delectable treat.

Communication tools for Grain Craft

Grain Craft has combined the personal service and dependability of three great flour millers into the nation’s largest independent flour milling company. Cereal Food Processors, Milner Milling and PFM united under the Grain Craft name, bringing together three respected companies with rich milling histories dating as far back as 1899.

Although their backgrounds and regions vary, each company shares core values about how to service your needs and how to conduct business the right way. Today, these core values form the very foundation of Grain Craft.

Since Grain Craft was just officially formed in 2014, the company has only recently started to develop a corporate culture to connect the three previously separate companies. Widgets & Stone worked with Grain Craft’s HR department create graphics to communicate these values to employees – through signs, murals, displays, wearables and online assets.

Roots Rated rebrands as Matcha

RootsRated.com, founded in 2012, is the leading website for where to go outdoors. The team behind the RootsRated.com publishing business formed RootsRated Media in 2016 to leverage their experience to develop proprietary content marketing software for lean marketing teams. By mid-2018, RootsRated Media had raised its Series A led by TechOperators, relocated from Chattanooga to Atlanta, and made the decision to rebrand as Matcha.

Widgets & Stone worked closely with Matcha’s leadership and marketing team to develop the new name and identity design. The creative team explored dozens of design solutions, settling on the bold and bright brand look. Striking photo treatments, distinct typography and well crafted illustrations round out the visual styles for the new brand.

As Matcha, the company is a leading content marketing platform for lean marketing teams selling direct-to-consumer. Small and growing organizations use Matcha to fuel their marketing and drive sustainable growth. Easily and efficiently source, distribute and measure content to drive customer awareness, acquisition and retention.

“Just as Matcha tea provides lasting energy to the drinker, we believe our content, insights and services act as fuel to boost marketing efforts and drive sustainable growth for small and medium size businesses,” said Fynn Glover, founder and CEO.

Graincraft Ad Campaign

Love that’s passed down

Graincraft is America’s largest independent miller of commercial flours. Because the company is made up of three great millers, Grain Craft actually has a 100 year history in the industry.

Widgets & Stone partnered with Grain Craft to develop the look and feel for a new ad campaign. With keen guidance from Grain Craft leadership, the creative team landed on designs and photography that bring their great products into view with contrast and depth.

“Just like a recipe that’s passed down with love from one generation to the other, there’s a shared passion for flour as it’s delivered from the hands of our farmers to our millers, and finally, to our bakers.”

Kenny’s Identity

Kenny Burnap (long time sous chef at St. John’s restaurant) has worked with Josh and Nancy Carter for many years. They teamed up to cross Market Street and open a new sandwich shop. Kenny combines his expertise in creating cured and artisan meats with fine dining flourishes to create delicious variations on sandwich classics.

Kenny’s Southside Sandwiches offers prime indoor and outdoor seating as well as online ordering in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. Starring Kenny’s house made meats and sides, the menu showcases the best of fresh, local ingredients from the area.

Widgets & Stone collaborated with Kenny and the Carters to create the identity design and necessary restaurant supplies. Widgets also helped to provide some design direction on the interiors and signage for the restaurant. Designer John Le created a series of custom illustrations for various applications.

Tinkering with Space

July 25, 2018

Who you are is how you work

Tinker Ma Brand Identity

Although Tinker Ma is a new name and company, its collective experience and commitment to community are nothing new. Trey Wheeler and Thomas Palmer of Cogent Studio and Craig Peavy of PVDesign are joining under the new brand of Tinker Ma and are offering clients their more than 60 years of combined expertise in architecture and design.

Architecture is complex, but Tinker Ma’s process is simple: take an idea from the client, breathe life and art into and reflect it back into the world. Widgets & Stone employed that exact same process with the three partners throughout the naming and identity design process.

The design team worked closely with Trey, Thomas, Craig and collaborative partner 26 Tools to uncover the ‘why’ of their new endeavor and explore a variety of names and brand identity solutions.

The final result is a design that tinkers with space (‘ma’ is japanese for “space”). A modular system that allows for experimenting, for playing within places, and for perfecting the spaces in between.

“Tinker Ma believes that who you are is how you work, and what you make, and the things you leave behind.”

Chattanooga FC Uniform Design

Widgets & Stone has designed the Chattanooga Football Club’s kits for the tenth time in the club’s history.

Taking cues from what had come before (2009-2015, 2016, 2017), the design team used navy and white uniforms from the founding season, with touches of sky blue for accents. Drawing inspiration from partners/sponsors VW and vfl Wolfsburg, the designers created patterns out of dynamic linear elements to create the sense of movement and transition.

Champions of Your Cause

Cempa Rebrand

Since 1986, Chattanooga CARES’ mission has been to reach, assist, and support people impacted by HIV. Recently, CARES’ services have grown to cover Hepatitis C, STIs and many other primary care services. Along with that growth, the organization is expanding well beyond the city of Chattanooga. They have done this with compassionate and responsive delivery of education health, social, and advocacy related services.

Because of this growth, the Board of Directors felt that the organization needed a new name and identity that reflected their expanding services and service area. After an extensive naming process, the board landed on Cempa Community Care and Widgets & Stone went to work on identity designs.

The end result is a strong typographic approach that is clean and understated – both professional and approachable. The medical cross is formed by the overlapping of two arrows, arrows that also double as framing devices or symbols of movement. Flat color combines with warm photography to present information clearly.

The board also wanted to keep the Chattanooga CARES name, utilizing it for the foundation side of the organization. Widgets & Stone redesigned the heritage logo to fit with the new brand design.

Surprising Beauty

EF Contract 2018 Neocon Showroom

We live in a world that is full of surprising beauty. It’s easy to miss. But it’s also easy to find. To see it, all we have to do is slow down, stop and look.

For it’s first year as EF Contract, the new brand’s showroom was inspired by small, everyday moments of delight and discovery. Of Surprising Beauty. EF Contract sent out an open call to designers around the country, inviting them to share moments of surprising beauty. They received amazing submissions. The design team chose a handful of favorites for display alongside their newest collections.

With all of their attention focused on the launch of a new brand and revamped products, the team at EF Contract wasn’t able to start work on their showroom design until much much later than their competitors. Widgets & Stone worked within a tight timeline to create a simple showroom that captured EF’s brand and vision.

Designers Liz Tapp and Mark Slawson created clean displays and furnishings that would best tell the story of the new products. A simple metal hanging system for clear printed polycarbonate and metal shows off design inspirations. New tables hold custom trays of products under glass tops and actual product books or samples underneath. Custom wallpaper and printed scrim reinforce the theme of surprising beauty.

“The showroom design turned out wonderfully! We could not be more pleased with the result,” said Susan Curtis, EF Contract’s VP of Design & Marketing.

Take a virtual tour of the showroom here.

Adams Litho Plastic Promo

For decades, Adams Litho has been a leader in amazing print quality on the national and even international level. As they expanded their print capabilities with new high tech equipment and partnerships to include printing on plastics, metallics and removable stickers, they looked to promote these products and services to their clients.

Widgets & Stone helped to create a print promotional that showcased their plastic printing products and services. The booklet is printed entirely on plastic – some opaque and some transparent – with a removable Radiant™ window graphic attached.

Witty writing by Adam Haskew and in-store photography by Dotson Commercial provide a great overview of the types of plastic printing Adams can provide. The piece has been popular and successful, getting Adams opportunities with national companies like Carmike Theaters and Publix grocery stores.

The design team also created a email campaign and a short video for Adams site to help push the offerings.
