Stories that Matter

Chattamatters Visual Identity

Chattamatters is a brand new project from The Enterprise Center in partnership with The City of Chattanooga. Civic Storytelling Director, Mary Helen Montgomery, and Videographer & Motion Graphics Producer, Ian-Alijah Bey, have teamed up to lead the project. Pitched as a civic storytelling initiative, Chattamatters aims to "promote civic engagement and help residents understand some of the biggest issues facing our community (and how to address them)".

We worked with the Chattamatters team to design a visual identity that is bold and optimistic in tone, straightforward and approachable in execution. The visual strategy is meant to center the content and not the brand—to unite the series of stories with a cohesive aesthetic that does not complicate the user's experience.

To the Rescue

Logo for Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus

In 2000 volunteer firefighter James Wessel helped his local fire department purchase a used firetruck. When the truck broke down on its very first call to a house fire and the house was lost completely, they went back to the salesman who brokered the deal looking for compensation. As it turned into a lengthy legal battle, James decided that he could do better. He founded Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus in 2001, buying, fixing and selling one fire truck that first year.

In the twenty plus years since then, the company has grown by leaps and bounds — buying, fixing and selling hundreds and hundreds of vehicles every year. But as the company’s reputation and brand equity has grown, the original logo began to lag behind, not adequately expressing their integrity and expertise.

After a failed attempt at logo redesign a few years ago, we were asked to come the rescue. We created a new logo that embraced their rich heritage but also would take them into the next era of growth. We developed a flexible logo system that could accommodate all the many applications: digital, print, apparel and more.

Be Green, Be Good

Be Green, Be Good

Green for Good Logo

The Green for Good idea was spawned from Startup Week CHA, in which entrepreneurs were invited to pitch ideas to the city for ways to inspire better recycling practices. Brian Wright’s Green for Good was one of four ideas chosen by the city and awarded grant money to pilot the program and assess the results.

The Green for Good concept is a threefold plan: identify fun, inventive ways to recycle in the home, school, and at work. Businesses and organizations on the Southside that will be participating in the pilot program for the month of January. The Green for Good team will be collecting the recycling on a weekly basis.

Proceeds from the collections will benefit Habit for Humanity. Each participating business will compete to win a Green for Good prize pack.

Widgets & Stone donated a logo to help the cause get off to a good green start.

Hello Monty on the Corner

Hello Monty on the Corner

Signage & Graphics

We told you about helping our long time collaborator Rob Gentry as he and his brother Clay worked to start the new restaurant and bar, Hello Monty. The construction was completed and Hello Monty opened to the public in October of 2020. We also were able to help put some finishing touches on the beautiful building remodel Rob and Clay did with Tucker Build: the signs.

Designed to be a classic neighborhood joint, Rob and Clay wanted the signage to be minimal and to complement the building. Art Director Mark Walter expanded on Designer Travis Hitchcock’s stacked type logo and identity to make an elegant sign that took advantage of being on the corner. A bright “Hello” neon sign in the script from the logo lights the way to the slightly hidden location of the front door.

Inside the bar, Mark added a wall mural of a vintage map. While now known as Main Street, it used to be called Montgomery Avenue, and that was the inspiration for the name.

Growing the Mission Médicos

Growing the Mission

Médicos Mission Fund Logo and Identity

Clínica Médicos was founded in 2015 by Dr. Kelly Rodney Arnold to make quality, comprehensive healthcare accessible to Chattanooga’s underserved Latino community regardless of insurance status, language, pregnancy, age, or gender. In six short years, from their clinic at 1300 East 23rd Street, it has realized that mission by providing outstanding care and empowering the next generation of medical professionals through education and hands-on training.

Now, Clínica Médicos is growing. Dr. Arnold and her colleagues have acquired a new facility at 1148 East 23rd Street — a former automotive garage across from the Sculpture Fields at Montague Park — and will soon offer a fuller range of medical services, including mental health and counseling, dentistry, and more.

To bring this vision to life, they have created the Médicos Mission Fund, a new non-profit, 501c3 organization that will fund the growth of a new campus, outstanding educational experiences for our physicians and high-quality medical services and equipment for the families who rely on Clinica medicos.

Widgets & Stone helped to create a logo that pairs perfectly with the Clínica Médicos identity and dovetails into print materials as well.

The Opposite of Egocentric

The Opposite of Egocentric

The AlloHire identity design

Founded by Hudson Brock, AlloHire is a boutique tech recruiting agency. They are relationship-driven, they believe in quality over quantity, and they are distinctly tech-centric. For these reasons they drew their name from the little known word “allocentric” which means “having one’s interest and attention centered on others.” It is the exact opposite of egocentric and totally fits the young company’s personality.

We created a plainspoken, type-only logo for AlloHire. The macron (the line over the vowel that makes you say “its name”) puts the focus on a single character, centered in the name, hinting at how AlloHire focuses on each individual client. The macron also has connotations of “raising the bar” and moving upward, just like what the recruiters do for their customers.

To go with the logo, we built an extremely minimal web site and helped AlloHire put what they do into just the right words.

J. Billingsley Paint & Coatings Logo

Jacob and Sara Billingsley are striking out on their own after many years of experience in commercial paint and coating services. The new company will focus on residential projects.

They wanted to stay away from tired or trite references to painting—paint brush imagery, rollers, cans etc. Our Senior Designer, Mark Walter, decided that a more subtle or abstract reference to paints and coatings – coupled with the use of a monogram – focuses on the professionals at the core of the business. The result helps to differentiate them from your run-of-the mill local house painting business.

Mark wanted the type choices and implementation to lend a sort of blue-collar, hardworking tradesman, no-nonsense tone. On a design-related note: color transparency experiments that play into the final color palette were inspired by Josef Albers. It’s an interesting connection that a lot of his color theory work was essentially cutting and arranging paint swatches!

Niedlov’s Rebrand

May 22, 2020

Love to Knead, Knead to Love II

Niedlov’s Rebrand

Inspired by trips overseas, Niedlov’s new owner Erik Zilen tasked us with updating their look in hopes of recreating the transportive feeling that comes with setting foot inside the same venerable bakeries he visited in Europe.

The challenge was to update one of Main Street’s most recognizable, and established logos and create something that was going to walk the fine line between being refreshing and new, while also still retaining the timelessness of the previous logo. And to update an original logo that we designed in 2004.

The end result was a wordmark inspired by the handcrafted, old-world typefaces seen in documents from the late 1700s, paired with a color system that showcases the unique ingredients that have made Niedlov’s a Chattanooga staple for the past twenty-plus years.

Sandwiches on the Southside

Kenny’s Identity

Kenny Burnap (long time sous chef at St. John’s restaurant) has worked with Josh and Nancy Carter for many years. They teamed up to cross Market Street and open a new sandwich shop. Kenny combines his expertise in creating cured and artisan meats with fine dining flourishes to create delicious variations on sandwich classics.

Kenny’s Southside Sandwiches offers prime indoor and outdoor seating as well as online ordering in the heart of downtown Chattanooga. Starring Kenny’s house made meats and sides, the menu showcases the best of fresh, local ingredients from the area.

Widgets & Stone collaborated with Kenny and the Carters to create the identity design and necessary restaurant supplies. Widgets also helped to provide some design direction on the interiors and signage for the restaurant. Designer John Le created a series of custom illustrations for various applications.

Tinkering with Space

July 25, 2018

Who you are is how you work

Tinker Ma Brand Identity

Although Tinker Ma is a new name and company, its collective experience and commitment to community are nothing new. Trey Wheeler and Thomas Palmer of Cogent Studio and Craig Peavy of PVDesign are joining under the new brand of Tinker Ma and are offering clients their more than 60 years of combined expertise in architecture and design.

Architecture is complex, but Tinker Ma’s process is simple: take an idea from the client, breathe life and art into and reflect it back into the world. Widgets & Stone employed that exact same process with the three partners throughout the naming and identity design process.

The design team worked closely with Trey, Thomas, Craig and collaborative partner 26 Tools to uncover the ‘why’ of their new endeavor and explore a variety of names and brand identity solutions.

The final result is a design that tinkers with space (‘ma’ is japanese for “space”). A modular system that allows for experimenting, for playing within places, and for perfecting the spaces in between.

“Tinker Ma believes that who you are is how you work, and what you make, and the things you leave behind.”

ID for the ID

ID for the ID

Innovation District Identity

The City of Chattanooga defined an innovation district—or more accurately, described it by circling a large portion of downtown on a map. Unfortunately, the City initially contracted an “identity design” from an online logo generator, and created signage using the mark.

Although City leaders were well-intentioned, as might be expected, the Chattanooga design community raised its eyebrows, then its hands, then its voices.

So the City put out an RFP for a proper identity to be developed. One that grew out of the community, represented it, and tapped local talent.

The Mayor describes the Innovation District as “A catalytic mix of start-up businesses, business incubators & accelerators, alongside innovation economy generators & amenities—available in a dense, walkable urban core.” Drawn in a way that includes parts of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the revitalized Southside, and much of the urban core—the district is centered on a Market Street building called the Edney Innovation Center, which serves as “a connecting point, support base, and catalyst for the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

However, innovation here is not limited to technology or entrepreneurship. It can happen in any field. It can pop up anywhere, from the Edney Building to the parks, the Community Kitchen to coffeeshops.

“There’s an irony to creating a brand about an innovation district,” said collaborator Caleb Ludwick of 26 Tools llc. “Innovation, at its best, is something they can’t be programmed. It’s like inspiration or good luck: it happens, and the best you can do is have the right people in place, and be prepared to catch it and hold onto it as it takes flight. We wanted to create an identity that—while more a logo than a fully shaped brand—gives a focal point to the focal point, creates a unified look and feel that can be implemented throughout the district, helps shape a narrative for the future, and hopefully opens doors for everyone.”

The design process dove deeply into the potential of the District. Asking questions like: What sort of impacts does the district have? On which people? What technologies? Jobs? Education? Resources? Health? And in this day and age, what does innovation mean, anyway?

“We were very fortunate that the Mayor’s office, River City Company, and the Enterprise Center allowed us to put together a team of writers and designers who have the talent and the experience to pull off such an effort,” said Paul Rustand of Widgets. “We’re very proud of what we’ve made together, because it captures and expresses not only our pride in Chattanooga but also in the great ideas that are born here, every day.”

High Rollin'

High Rollin’

Airport Shuttle for Business Travels

A high-end version of the Chattanooga to Atlanta airport shuttle, called Roller Bus. It is targeted at business travelers going back and forth who don’t want to fool with trying to fly directly out of Chattanooga for a number of reasons:

1) lack of productive time in constant transition (they can’t work, whereas they can literally bill hours on the bus)

2) lack of predictability (flights are often delayed or cancelled to and from Atlanta)

3) Cost/convenience (including not having to pay to park in Atlanta)

Widgets & Stone created a clean and simple identity to communicate professional efficiency and quality.

Vision brings a wealth of expertise from the hospitality industry and is positioning 10 North to be a premier residential location in the city.

Cognitive Training

Cognitive Training

Identity for drug-free, alternative treatment to ADHD

Entrepreneur Chris Wright is using a highly focused form of cognitive therapy to treat ADHD in young adolescents. The new treatment centers will utilize brain mapping technology to identify what parts of the brain are not functioning at potential, then “brain games” and exercises will be employed to improve brain and concentration abilities.

Cognitive therapy and training has been used for decades to improve all types of mental faculties, but Foci is honed in particularly on helping adolescents struggling with ADD and ADHD.

Chris Wright created the business concept and chose the name Foci (the plural form of “focus”). He turned to Widgets & Stone for help in creating a basic identity to capture and communicate the essence of the new brand he and his team are building. The ideas of concentration and focus are at the heart of the visual language the team generated.
