A Good Business

Relationship Business design identity

Relationship Business is the latest endeavor of Goodstory (and Counsel Creative) founder, Kenny Morgan. As a writer, podcaster, and coach, Morgan champions a message of people-over-profit—relationships before business. Keen for a fresh perspective, Kenny asked Widgets & Stone to build a flexible visual identity to unite his many projects. The resulting system hinges on a versatile typographic strategy softened by a nature-made color palette and hand-drawn flourishes.

Be sure to keep an out eye for the book and the podcast as they roll out in the coming months!

A Bright Start

BrightBase Identity Design

BrightBase Management was founded by the grandson of what is now known as Republic Parking Services. With over 50 years of combined experience, the BrightBase team serves the Chattanooga area with a southern charm that is wise and welcoming.

As an new entity, BrightBase needed branding that reflected the expertise and insight that accompanies decades of management experience, while capturing the loyal, neighborly essence to be expected of a Chattanooga local’s entrepreneurial venture. Widgets & Stone helped guide the new company through naming and identity design. The typographic logomark, the brand’s jumping off point, subtly connotes driving lanes or parking lines, while grounding itself with a highly legible sans serif font.

The website guides customers and potential employees with bold buttons and simple drop-down menus. BrightBases’ web presence is so instinctive, a user could navigate it while driving—though we don’t recommend it!

Growing the Mission Médicos

Growing the Mission

Médicos Mission Fund Logo and Identity

Clínica Médicos was founded in 2015 by Dr. Kelly Rodney Arnold to make quality, comprehensive healthcare accessible to Chattanooga’s underserved Latino community regardless of insurance status, language, pregnancy, age, or gender. In six short years, from their clinic at 1300 East 23rd Street, it has realized that mission by providing outstanding care and empowering the next generation of medical professionals through education and hands-on training.

Now, Clínica Médicos is growing. Dr. Arnold and her colleagues have acquired a new facility at 1148 East 23rd Street — a former automotive garage across from the Sculpture Fields at Montague Park — and will soon offer a fuller range of medical services, including mental health and counseling, dentistry, and more.

To bring this vision to life, they have created the Médicos Mission Fund, a new non-profit, 501c3 organization that will fund the growth of a new campus, outstanding educational experiences for our physicians and high-quality medical services and equipment for the families who rely on Clinica medicos.

Widgets & Stone helped to create a logo that pairs perfectly with the Clínica Médicos identity and dovetails into print materials as well.

The Opposite of Egocentric

The Opposite of Egocentric

The AlloHire identity design

Founded by Hudson Brock, AlloHire is a boutique tech recruiting agency. They are relationship-driven, they believe in quality over quantity, and they are distinctly tech-centric. For these reasons they drew their name from the little known word “allocentric” which means “having one’s interest and attention centered on others.” It is the exact opposite of egocentric and totally fits the young company’s personality.

We created a plainspoken, type-only logo for AlloHire. The macron (the line over the vowel that makes you say “its name”) puts the focus on a single character, centered in the name, hinting at how AlloHire focuses on each individual client. The macron also has connotations of “raising the bar” and moving upward, just like what the recruiters do for their customers.

To go with the logo, we built an extremely minimal web site and helped AlloHire put what they do into just the right words.

RockPoint Bank Brand Identity

“Our City Deserves a Local Bank”

RockPoint Bank Brand Identity

The founders and shareholders of RockPoint Bank believe it will fill the void left by the disappearance of truly local Chattanooga financial institutions. The newly planned bank will not only bring critical lending decisions back home, it will conduct every aspect of its operations in the best interests of local business owners, entrepreneurs, and their constituents.

Widgets & Stone worked closely with the team of founders, led by Hamp Johnston, Camille Daniel, Kerry Riley and Patrick Jensen to walk through the naming and branding process for the new bank.

The result is a dynamic mark, inspired by the region’s landscape and the city’s skyline. The symbol calls to mind upward movement, sailing and flying – an expression of the bold and adventurous endeavor of starting something new.

The capital campaign began in early 2020 and has certainly faced some challenges with COVID-19 and the subsequent lockdowns, but the founding group has tremendous confidence in their position, purpose, and prospects. Their enthusiasm has RockPoint rapidly approaching their goal. Widgets & Stone looks forward to bringing the brand to life when the raise is complete and the bank is established in the community.

Alleo Brand Identity

Hospice of Chattanooga has had a long and strong history providing patients and their loved ones a full spectrum of compassionate care. Over the past couple years the organization has grown – in addition to hospice and palliative care, they now also offer pediatric and perinatal programs for children facing life-limiting illness.

The board and leadership of Hospice of Chattanooga has also been expanding the nonprofit family of service organizations in Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina. With this growth, Hospice of Chattanooga found it needed a new brand system to unite its variety of organizations and services.

Widgets & Stone worked closely with the leadership team to create Alleo Health System, the umbrella brand for all the organizations. A new logo and complete identity system was put into place to unify the different services and locations across the southeast.

Web, advertising, signage, business stationery systems, videos and more have been part of the complete rebrand.

Blue Plate / Local 191 shuttle wrap

Widgets & Stone has been working with Chattanooga’s metropolitan diner, The Blue Plate, for over a decade. The design team also helped develop the bar brand that grew out of the Blue Plate space in 2012: Local 191.

As part of brand development, the design team has been involved in marketing efforts like billboards, advertisements, social media and email design. For fall of 2018 the Blue Plate and 191 experimented with a bus wrap on downtown Chattanooga’s free electric shuttle service.

The designs celebrate the personalities of each brand while still working together to create a cohesive wrap.

Logo for Healy & Co.

Healy & Company, LLC is a boutique commercial brokerage firm with a national reach based in Chattanooga, TN.  With deep roots within the community, (since 2002), Healy & Company has been among the top producers in the region in commercial transactions.

Widgets & Stone redesigned the Healy & Co web site in early 2018. When the company decided to shift away from its main identity being associated with SVN, owner John Healy asked the team at Widgets to create a logo with a sense of heritage and history. The team created a unique look that is sure to stand out in the competitive landscape of contemporary logo styles.

Designer Travis Hitchcock developed a vintage line rendering of the company’s offices and paired it with a customized version of the LHF Whistler typeface.

Tinkering with Space

July 25, 2018

Who you are is how you work

Tinker Ma Brand Identity

Although Tinker Ma is a new name and company, its collective experience and commitment to community are nothing new. Trey Wheeler and Thomas Palmer of Cogent Studio and Craig Peavy of PVDesign are joining under the new brand of Tinker Ma and are offering clients their more than 60 years of combined expertise in architecture and design.

Architecture is complex, but Tinker Ma’s process is simple: take an idea from the client, breathe life and art into and reflect it back into the world. Widgets & Stone employed that exact same process with the three partners throughout the naming and identity design process.

The design team worked closely with Trey, Thomas, Craig and collaborative partner 26 Tools to uncover the ‘why’ of their new endeavor and explore a variety of names and brand identity solutions.

The final result is a design that tinkers with space (‘ma’ is japanese for “space”). A modular system that allows for experimenting, for playing within places, and for perfecting the spaces in between.

“Tinker Ma believes that who you are is how you work, and what you make, and the things you leave behind.”

Champions of Your Cause

June 21, 2018

Champions of your cause.

Cempa Rebrand

Since 1986, Chattanooga CARES’ mission has been to reach, assist, and support people impacted by HIV. Recently, CARES’ services have grown to cover Hepatitis C, STIs and many other primary care services. Along with that growth, the organization is expanding well beyond the city of Chattanooga. They have done this with compassionate and responsive delivery of education health, social, and advocacy related services.

Because of this growth, the Board of Directors felt that the organization needed a new name and identity that reflected their expanding services and service area. After an extensive naming process, the board landed on Cempa Community Care and Widgets & Stone went to work on identity designs.

The end result is a strong typographic approach that is clean and understated – both professional and approachable. The medical cross is formed by the overlapping of two arrows, arrows that also double as framing devices or symbols of movement. Flat color combines with warm photography to present information clearly.

The board also wanted to keep the Chattanooga CARES name, utilizing it for the foundation side of the organization. Widgets & Stone redesigned the heritage logo to fit with the new brand design.

Innovation District Identity

The City of Chattanooga defined an innovation district—or more accurately, described it by circling a large portion of downtown on a map. Unfortunately, the City initially contracted an “identity design” from an online logo generator, and created signage using the mark.

Although City leaders were well-intentioned, as might be expected, the Chattanooga design community raised its eyebrows, then its hands, then its voices.

So the City put out an RFP for a proper identity to be developed. One that grew out of the community, represented it, and tapped local talent.

The Mayor describes the Innovation District as “A catalytic mix of start-up businesses, business incubators & accelerators, alongside innovation economy generators & amenities—available in a dense, walkable urban core.” Drawn in a way that includes parts of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the revitalized Southside, and much of the urban core—the district is centered on a Market Street building called the Edney Innovation Center, which serves as “a connecting point, support base, and catalyst for the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

However, innovation here is not limited to technology or entrepreneurship. It can happen in any field. It can pop up anywhere, from the Edney Building to the parks, the Community Kitchen to coffeeshops.

“There’s an irony to creating a brand about an innovation district,” said collaborator Caleb Ludwick of 26 Tools llc. “Innovation, at its best, is something they can’t be programmed. It’s like inspiration or good luck: it happens, and the best you can do is have the right people in place, and be prepared to catch it and hold onto it as it takes flight. We wanted to create an identity that—while more a logo than a fully shaped brand—gives a focal point to the focal point, creates a unified look and feel that can be implemented throughout the district, helps shape a narrative for the future, and hopefully opens doors for everyone.”

The design process dove deeply into the potential of the District. Asking questions like: What sort of impacts does the district have? On which people? What technologies? Jobs? Education? Resources? Health? And in this day and age, what does innovation mean, anyway?

“We were very fortunate that the Mayor’s office, River City Company, and the Enterprise Center allowed us to put together a team of writers and designers who have the talent and the experience to pull off such an effort,” said Paul Rustand of Widgets. “We’re very proud of what we’ve made together, because it captures and expresses not only our pride in Chattanooga but also in the great ideas that are born here, every day.”

High Rollin'

High Rollin’

Airport Shuttle for Business Travels

A high-end version of the Chattanooga to Atlanta airport shuttle, called Roller Bus. It is targeted at business travelers going back and forth who don’t want to fool with trying to fly directly out of Chattanooga for a number of reasons:

1) lack of productive time in constant transition (they can’t work, whereas they can literally bill hours on the bus)

2) lack of predictability (flights are often delayed or cancelled to and from Atlanta)

3) Cost/convenience (including not having to pay to park in Atlanta)

Widgets & Stone created a clean and simple identity to communicate professional efficiency and quality.

Drinking Knowledge

Imbibe brand identity and signage

Josh and Nancy Carter (owners of award winning restaurants St. John’s and St. John’s Meeting Place in Chattanooga) partnered with a group accomplished entrepreneurs to open a new store for fine wines, spirits and beer. The group hopes to bring the same high level of customer service and knowledge of fine dining restaurants to the experience of shopping for wine, liquor and beer. They asked the talented designers and architects of Cogent Studio to design the store, and turned to Widgets & Stone for help with identity and signage designs.

With great input from the Carters, the design team drew inspiration from the interior design and architecture of the warehouse space and elaborated on it. The end result is a limited color palette with strong typography appropriate to barrels, corkscrews and loading docks. The biggest inspiration for the customized logotype (a slightly modified version of the face Sullivan) coming from the signage structure on the front of the building.

A Billboard That Stands for Something

Billboards for Education Identity

Billboards for Education was created to give hope and support to local educators who struggle with an ever-present lack of classroom resources. As an outdoor advertising company, we use a proven, profitable business model to generate revenues. We then donate 10% of every dollar, from every billboard ad, to local schools. Earning for learning.

Owner and founder Matt Richman realized at the young age of 17 that true greatness is not defined by how much a person has, but how much a person gives. This realization prompted him to change his ultimate professional goal from gaining as much wealth as possible, to positively impacting the lives of as many people as possible.

Already an experienced business owner and entrepreneur, Matt realized the importance of a strong brand identity and writing. He reached out to Caleb Ludwick (26 Tools) and Paul Rustand (Widgets & Stone) to help. Together the team created a set of visual and verbal tools to help Matt establish his new venture and communicate is goals and differentiation points.
