Chattanooga FC 2017 Kit Designs

For every single one of Chattanooga FC’s nine seasons, Widgets & Stone has designed the uniforms. Drawing on the traditions of more established clubs around the globe, Chattanooga FC Brand Director Paul Rustand established a pattern: cleaner and more conservative designs in navy and white for odd years, more unusual and experimental in sky and gold in even years.

2017 sees the club return to the founding color palette of an all-navy home kit and an all-white away kit. The collar design from 2015′s National Finalist team returns, but in the same color as the jersey. Strips of the sky and gold highlight colors run down each side and meet in the middle below the collar. The bright green goalkeeper kit is inspired by Chattanooga FC’s new partnership with vfl Wolfsburg – their home jersey was electric green this season.

Founding Day

April 19, 2017

Today marks the ten year anniversary of the founding of Capitalmark Bank. We had the honor of designing a keepsake for the founding investors.

Maycreate worked with the leadership group to create the brand and identity. Creative Director Brian May reached out to us to help create an elegant gift to commemorate the launch.

We designed a sturdy envelope to hold the special edition coins, one that would also fold into a simple display to sit on a desk. The design incorporated Guilloche patterns common to stock certificates and currency design. Maycreate’s brand design for Capitalmark was also incorporated, along with a simple message to honor the founding day.

The limited edition design was letterpress printed masterfully by Evan Holloway at Widgets & Stone. Adams Litho did the diecutting and assembly for final delivery.

A brief history of Capitalmark Bank:

CapitalMark Bank & Trust was a Chattanooga-based commercial bank founded in 2007 by a group of experienced bankers who envisioned a more personalized banking model focused on privately owned businesses, executives, and professionals. By early 2012, assets had reached $700 million, and by mid-2015, CapitalMark reported more than $1 billion in assets.

In April 2015, Nashville’s Pinnacle Financial Partners announced it would acquire CapitalMark in a $187 million deal. The merger was approved by CapitalMark shareholders in July and completed on July 31, 2015. After the merger, CapitalMark operated as a division of Pinnacle Bank until March 2016, when its name and operations were fully integrated into Pinnacle Financial Partners.

A redesign for a trio of sites

Danielle Alvarez Greer is known professionally as “The Happy Family Coach.” She is the co-founder and owner of The Reality Formula for Kids and the Happy Kid Toolkit.

The Reality Formula for Kids is a child-friendly model for conflict resolution that facilitates team building. It positions challenges as growth opportunities, rather than problems. This formula is utilized in the Happy Kid Toolkit, which is a sort of board game: a training tool that provides an opportunity for self-discovery and a solution to the challenging situations that children will inevitably face as they grow.

As Danielle prepared to launch her new Toolkit product, she realized she needed a more unified and functional family of web sites to help her coordinate – and distinguish — her related products and services. Liz Tapp led the comprehensive redesign of all three sites, integrating a variety of videos and tools into Squarespace templates. Keely Hungate of 26 Tools led the messaging strategy and writing for the new sites.

The end result is a cohesive and an organized set of sites, all clearly part of the same family of brands. See a video walkthrough of the site features here.

Surfaces 2017 Viewbook

For the second year in a row, Widgets & Stone created the look and feel for Mannington’s view book for Surfaces, the international event for floor covering. The design team worked from the client’s theme: The Shape of Things to Come and new product development to produce the clean and elegant overview.

Laura Michael took the lead on design, art directing the still life photos by Dotson Commercial and creating the entire layout of the booklet. Travis Hitchcock and Liz Tapp contributed cut-out customized type design for the cover.

Design concepts for a boutique hotel

Vision Hospitality Group’s first one-of-a-kind hotel project is The Edwin. Steps from the historic Walnut Street Bridge (a symbol of the city’s robust urban renewal), The Edwin is also Chattanooga’s first luxury boutique hotel. This luxe 90-room newcomer proudly connects the area’s rich history of Southern hospitality with modern-day trends and cuisines.

Vision’s team has been building and managing hotels successfully for years – for all the top hotel brands in the country. But creating a hotel from scratch added a new responsibility: branding. While Vision worked with a premier hotel design and development firm to create the identity and branding, they still needed help connecting that identity to practical items like signage and print materials.

They asked Widgets & Stone to provide print and sign design concepts based on the ever-evolving hotel style – connecting the identity design to the quality of the hotel space and its planned level of service. The team elevated the designs by introducing vintage illustrations and gold foil stamping into the print production. Sign design concepts married both the architecture and the historical inspirations.

Event posters for the mayor

Every year, Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke hosts a special event get together with select constituents. The staples of the event are barbecue, a Bruce Springsteen playlist and the mayor himself – hence the title of “Bruce BBQ and Berke.”

Widgets & Stone donated a bunch of poster designs, and these are three of the favorite finalists.

New (True) Colors

CFC Jerseys 2016

Widgets & Stone has been designing for the Chattanooga Football Club since its inception in 2009. For eight seasons the primary colors of the club have been sky, white and navy, with gold being a minor accent color. With inspiration from board member Tim Kelly, new jersey designs made the yellow gold the primary color for the 2016 season.

The new color combination was quite controversial, eliciting strong reactions from the club’s most ardent supporters, the Chattahooligans. While a great deal of social media expressed dislike or pure hatred for the new uniforms, sales went through the roof – selling almost four times the quantity of the previous best selling jerseys.

Innovation District Identity

The City of Chattanooga defined an innovation district—or more accurately, described it by circling a large portion of downtown on a map. Unfortunately, the City initially contracted an “identity design” from an online logo generator, and created signage using the mark.

Although City leaders were well-intentioned, as might be expected, the Chattanooga design community raised its eyebrows, then its hands, then its voices.

So the City put out an RFP for a proper identity to be developed. One that grew out of the community, represented it, and tapped local talent.

The Mayor describes the Innovation District as “A catalytic mix of start-up businesses, business incubators & accelerators, alongside innovation economy generators & amenities—available in a dense, walkable urban core.” Drawn in a way that includes parts of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the revitalized Southside, and much of the urban core—the district is centered on a Market Street building called the Edney Innovation Center, which serves as “a connecting point, support base, and catalyst for the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

However, innovation here is not limited to technology or entrepreneurship. It can happen in any field. It can pop up anywhere, from the Edney Building to the parks, the Community Kitchen to coffeeshops.

“There’s an irony to creating a brand about an innovation district,” said collaborator Caleb Ludwick of 26 Tools llc. “Innovation, at its best, is something they can’t be programmed. It’s like inspiration or good luck: it happens, and the best you can do is have the right people in place, and be prepared to catch it and hold onto it as it takes flight. We wanted to create an identity that—while more a logo than a fully shaped brand—gives a focal point to the focal point, creates a unified look and feel that can be implemented throughout the district, helps shape a narrative for the future, and hopefully opens doors for everyone.”

The design process dove deeply into the potential of the District. Asking questions like: What sort of impacts does the district have? On which people? What technologies? Jobs? Education? Resources? Health? And in this day and age, what does innovation mean, anyway?

“We were very fortunate that the Mayor’s office, River City Company, and the Enterprise Center allowed us to put together a team of writers and designers who have the talent and the experience to pull off such an effort,” said Paul Rustand of Widgets. “We’re very proud of what we’ve made together, because it captures and expresses not only our pride in Chattanooga but also in the great ideas that are born here, every day.”

Build: The Future

September 22, 2016

Covenant College’s “BUILD: A Covenant Campaign,” was a multi-year, multi-million dollar comprehensive fundraising campaign that financed major campus improvements, strengthened the college’s endowment, and funded student financial aid that began in 2006 and ran through 2013.

The campaign was kicked off with an initial fundraising goal of $31 million over five years. But following swift and significant progress (including the completion of the new Andreas Hall residence hall and Brock Hall, a new academic building), the campaign was extended, with a new eight-year, $53 million goal — a goal that was met.

We worked directly with the President of Covenant College and his development staff to lead the campaign brand, name, messaging, and creative aspects of the campaign while also collaborating with the college’s full marketing team.

Bottle Designs for Moon Pie® Whiskey

The marketing team at Moon Pie is extremely adept at cultivating co-branding opportunities, and their newest endeavor is to create a subtle flavored whiskey. In contrast to the bold and sweet Moon Pie flavored moonshine that was created in the past, the whiskey is intended to appeal to seasoned drinkers with a more muted flavor profile.

For this product, Moon Pie is partnering with the experienced Beam Brothers distillery to create a tasteful blend. Widgets & Stone helped to create a label design that takes its cues from traditional whiskey packaging and ties in the heritage of the 100 year old Moon Pie brand.

Mannington Showroom · Neocon 2016

When Mannington approached Widgets & Stone to design not just a showroom, but an experience, for their centennial year at NeoCon 2016 at the Merchandise Mart in Chicago, we knew it would be an exciting yet challenging project to tackle.

Widgets & Stone devised a “pop up” showroom that completely transforms between Day 1 and Day 2, from the floor to the ceiling. With careful planning and strategy, a hide and reveal system was employed so that both days of displays could be installed all at once for easy transition. The two different showroom experiences would drive repeat traffic to the showroom both days, as well as maximize the relatively small 2200 square foot space to show the versatility of Mannington’s products.

Day one was an energetic mosaic of color, infused with cultural inspiration from New York, Mexico City, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Chicago, with a distinctly urban feel.  On day two, the same space morphed into an elegant, sophisticated showroom featuring lovely moments drawn from nature–from the grand scale of topography to the intimacy of a blown dandelion. The result was unprecedented traffic in the showroom, greater brand awareness, and happy reps.

To see more about how we changed the flooring, displays, wall colors, upholstery and more, overnight, watch the video here: https://youtu.be/Pzi_fX0G6e8

Putting the UI in Woople

Woople Client User Interface

Woople is an online learning tool designed to promote effective and efficient training of employees. Frustrated by the complexity of learning management systems, Woople founder Paul Cummings decided to create something better. In 2009, he launched Woople – designed for both large and small organizations to deliver video-based educational material with detailed reporting. Functioning like an internal YouTube, Woople saves companies across America money while providing a secure and efficient way for employees to learn.

After several years of implementation, Woople’s development team asked Widgets & Stone to help update the user interface. The team designed an elegantly simple and user-friendly interface.

High Rollin’

Airport Shuttle for Business Travels

A high-end version of the Chattanooga to Atlanta airport shuttle, called Roller Bus. It is targeted at business travelers going back and forth who don’t want to fool with trying to fly directly out of Chattanooga for a number of reasons:

1) lack of productive time in constant transition (they can’t work, whereas they can literally bill hours on the bus)

2) lack of predictability (flights are often delayed or cancelled to and from Atlanta)

3) Cost/convenience (including not having to pay to park in Atlanta)

Widgets & Stone created a clean and simple identity to communicate professional efficiency and quality.

MCA Logo Refresher

Mike Collins & Associates, Inc. (MCA) was founded in 1987 with two employees selling I.T. hardware. Today MCA has grown to over 60 employees in 3 cities,  with an I.T. service staff available to support every customer’s constantly changing I.T. needs nationwide. After almost thirty years serving customers, today MCA offers sales, service, depot, networking, cloud, security, and leasing – a complete technology solution for customers.

In 2009, the buzz of “the cloud” confused many businesses about what direction Information Technology was headed. MCA offered a fully tailored solution that allowed businesses to focus on their business, and not their aging technology. MCA Cloud became fully operational in 2011 and has continued to grow the largest regional solution for small and medium size businesses.

While this technological growth and innovation was exploding, the company’s visual identity was lagging behind. Company leadership reached out to Widgets & Stone to propose a new look and feel that accurately reflected MCA’s outstanding technology expertise and service.

Design Director Mandy Meredith led the design team through several iterations of a refreshed logotype, based on MCA’s long standing mark, and added a tech inspired symbol that drew on the company’s six main offerings.
